The New Empire was demolished in August 1997, a mere two months before a hearing on its historical status. It is now the site of the Rosa Parks Memorial Library.
The theater is best known as the site where Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on the bus to a white passenger, as well as the first venue in which Hank Williams Sr. performed.
