The Sterling Theatre opened in 1924 with 1000 seats. It was partially destroyed by a fire in 1943 and was rebuilt in 1944. It was twinned in the 1980s.

21st Century Cinemas closed the location in 2008. Skip Huston, who brought the Decatur Avon Theater back to life, reopened the Sterling on August 23, 2013.
