After opening as the Civic on September 20, 1940, the theater advertised itself as the Farmington Civic to avoid confusion with the Civic-Detroit several miles away. The theater was purchased in 1950 by Edward Hohler, who had managed it since its opening. The Civic was closed for five weeks in 1990 while the balcony was closed off as a second theater.
