The Alger was opened by the United Detroit circuit in August 1935 and was later part of Wisper & Wetsman's chain and then Suburban Detroit Theaters. The theater was remodeled in 1971 and again in 1977, when a stage was added.
It reopened in October 1978 as a live theater and hosted shows with the likes of the Tommy Dorsey and Glenn Miller orchestras, but returned to full-time movies before closing again in 1983.
With another set of new owners, the Alger reopened again, showing films until a riot broke out during a showing of "Friday the 13th Part 5". Patrons reportedly trashed the theater and someone started a fire on the stage the next night.
The Alger was eventually purchased in 1987 by a group called "Friends of the Alger" and occasionally hosted live performances.
