Information for this tour was contributed by Jim Cobb. This was a major Richmond theatre at one time. When originally opened, it was the first theatre in the area built as part of a shopping center. Later, it became the first theatre in the area equipped for 70mm projection and six channel stereo sound. Among the films shown there on exclusive road show, reserved seat runs on their giant screen were SOUTH PACIFIC, BEN-HUR, WEST SIDE STORY, MARY POPPINS, THE SOUND OF MUSIC (ran over two years!), THE BIBLE, THE SAND PEEBLES, and PATTON. Sadly, this was gutted in the early nineties and turned into a four screen multiplex.
An article in the October 26, 1989 Richmond Times-Dispatch reported that the renovated theater was expected to reopen December 15.
An article in the May 4, 1990 edition of the Roanoke Times reported that SKS Enterprises had purchased this theater and 17 others from Cineplex Odeon. Photos Photos remain the property of the Member and may not be reproduced without the written consent of the Member. |
