Opening day at The Galaxy Cinema, as it was called then in 1977, was an exciting event as the "latest" installment of the successful James Bond series, "The Spy Who Loved Me" premiered. After Roger Moore left The Galaxy, successive film offerings failed to attract customers and after eleven months the theatre closed. The operator, the B. S. Moss Company, had little faith in a venue whose location was below street level and wedged in the middle of a 1,400 unit condominium complex. The theatre remained closed for a decade, its 530 seats collecting dust until 1987, when it reopened as The Galaxy Theatre. Once again, the theatre failed to find an audience until a reduced rate admission policy was adopted and the rest, as they say, is history. Triplexed in 1989, The Galaxy Theatre has developed a far flung reputation for eclectic programming at an affordable price. In addition to our commercial fare, The Galaxy hosts the only regularly scheduled silent film series east of the Mississippi. Film critic Jeffrey Lyons has hosted a five week "Coming Attractions" program here, and the acclaimed Black Maria Film Festival of independent filmmakers was showcased annually at the theatre.
