The 2,000-seat Empress was built in 1912 for $150,000, and opened on January 19, 1913. Loews took over operation in 1918 and renamed the theater the Hippodrome. At one point, the Hipp's marquee collapsed, killing one and injuring several others. The theater closed in 1946, but was reopened three years later with the name Crest.
