Information for this tour was contributed by Bob Meza. Constructed as a bank in 1897, the building was also used as a shoe store before opening as the Capitol Theatre in 1917. The Capitol was the first public venue with air conditioning.
The theater closed in 1976 after the decline of the downtown business area and the building was used for various educational and business purposes.
Renovations to restore the Capitol began in 2004 and the theater reopened to the public on January 18, 2006, as the Cox Capitol Theatre. The theater is home to the Macon Film Festival.
An article in the 9/5/1976 edition of the Macon Telegraph announced that the theater would be closing that Labor Day. Photos Photos remain the property of the Member and may not be reproduced without the written consent of the Member. |
