Information for this tour was contributed by Dave Felthous. The Oak Tree Cinemas, which opened in 1986 with Tom Cruise's "Top Gun" in 70mm in the largest of six auditoriums, solved Sterling Theaters' frustration with the situation at nearby Northgate, where a series of mall owners had conflicting ideas about what would happen to the Northgate Theater.
The Oak Tree has four large auditoriums, the biggest in the 700-seat range, and two small ones. All have curved screens, four have 70mm equipment, and the largest has THX sound. Sterling's notion was to program arthouse fare in at least one of the small theaters, but Sterling sold to Cineplex Odeon six months after the Oak Tree opened, and the arthouse experiment was never tried.
