After the second Golden Bough was destroyed by a fire in 1949, this third theatre was built to replace it, consisting of a main proscenium theater above a smaller theater-in-the-round called the Circle Theatre.

Within a year, the main auditorium was leased to United California Theatres (followed by United Artists) to show movies while live productions continued in the Circle.

The entrance to the Golden Bough is on Monte Verde Street between Eighth and Ninth Avenues. The smaller Circle Theatre has a separate entrance on Casanova Street.

Grovemont Theatre (later, Pacific Repertory Theatre) took over in 1993.
