The American opened in 1907. It was being built as the Bell before the 1906 earthquake. Other names include Rialto, Rivoli Opera House, and it became the Embassy in 1927. During the early days of talkies, the Embassy featured "Vitaphone" on the vertical sign.

The Embassy was severely damaged in the 1989 earthquake and had to be demolished.
