Newport News' biggest and finest theatre. Opened in 1931 and was equipped with the very last Barton theatre organ ever built. The organ is currently installed in the Granada Theatre, Kansas City KS. The Paramount was destroyed in the mid '70s. Sadly, one course of the limestone facade evaded destruction and is still standing on the empty lot, still attached to the surviving structure to the west of the theatre.
An artilce in the 8/16/1975 edition of the Newport News Daily Press stated that ABC Theatres, owners of the Paramount since 1950 decided to close this theatre 9/4/1975, citing poor attendance. It was reopened by an independent operator some time after ABC closed it.
