Information for this tour was contributed by Kacee Quintana. The 5 Mile Plaza was a five screen theatre built inside a shopping center in the mid-1980s by Excellence Theatres, a small local theatre chain. The theatre was a box design, typical of the 1980s theatres, and was considerably small as it was in a corner of the shopping center.
The theatre was acquired by Carmike Cinemas in the early 1990s. Carmike never changed the huge sign that read Excellence Theatres. Rather, they placed their logo to the left side of the name, quite cheap looking.
The 5 Mile Plaza Theater did fairly well as it was the only theatre in that area at the time. However, in 1998, the opening of the Edwards 21 Cinemas just one freeway exit away made it extremely difficult for Carmike to book premium film product. Alas, the 5 Mile Plaza Theater fell victim to Carmike Cinemas' reorganization and went dark in 2000.
