The Liberty Drive-In opened in April 1952 advertised as "the finest and largest drive-in theater in the south for Colored people".

In February 1953, a second entrance and a "segregation fence" was built down the middle of the field (still with one screen) and advertising began for the 22nd Avenue Drive-In as if it was a completely different theater, with a grand opening and all.

The white section of the drive-in was renamed the Palm Drive-In in 1957.
