The Circle Theatre opened on July 15, 1928, in Whittier Square with the film "Across the Atlantic". Construction cost about $62,000, not including the $15,000 organ.

The theatre was not ornate, but was equipped with a 2-manual, 4-rank Robert Morton pipe organ. The organ was removed in 1931 and sold to the Tulsa Scottish Rite as silent pictures made their way out.

As the population began moving south in the 1970s, the theater began showing adult films. Renamed the Cine Centro, the theater reopened in the late 1980s showing Spanish-language films before closing again in the mid-1990s.

In 2002, the Circle Cinema Foundation was formed, getting the theater listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2003 and reopening the theater in 2004. In 2005, the foundation repurchased the original 1928 pipe organ, which was restored and reinstalled by the American Theatre Organ Society.

The Circle now consists of two auditoriums within the original building and a third auditorium and gallery space in the neighboring building.
