The Vogue opened on Dec. 22nd, 1939 with a showing of Lady of the Tropics (2nd big feature Underpup). It operated continuously as a movie theatre until September of 1998 when its last showing was a Wednesday night screening of "Your Friends and Neighbors". It was the last single-screen neighborhood theatre in Louisville to close.
It opened with Motiograph projectors but, probably in November of 1953, had two Simplex X/L projectors installed to go with the new Cinemascope-width screen. From 1973-1978 it was run as a repertory art-house cinema by Marty Sussman, a local entrepreneur. It continued running as a repertory theatre until the mid-eighties when it ran first-run foreign and independent films.
On Feb. 21, 2001, St. Matthews Triangle LLC, the partnership that owns the Vogue and its surrounding shopping center, asked the Historic Landmarks and Preservation Districts Commission for another year to explore possible redevelopment plans. The partnership, which advocated demolition of the theater last fall, is now "committed to redeveloping the Vogue Theatre complex in such a way as to preserve the theater structure." The Vogue -- which has been closed for several years -- shares a small shopping strip with a recently-vacated drugstore and several other businesses, and the entire complex suffers from a lack of parking facilities. Still, there's hope that someone can find a practical use for the theater.
