Originally built in 1876 as the Dobson Building, a 1914 renovation by architect Clarence Blackall converted the building into the first venue in Boston designed specifically to show movies.
All but the facade of the 1914 Modern was demolished by Suffolk University in 2009 and a new 185-seat theatre of the same name was built behind the facade, opening on November 4, 2010.
