Information for this tour was contributed by Darren Snow. "NOW! SHOWING!" blurted the first Trib ad for the new Jerry Lewis triplex at the Biscayne Mall. There was apparently no accompanying article on the opening, if indeed this was the theatre's first day. Boom, there it was. And Bust, it was over in a flash. Manager Jerry Glassburn was struggling almost from the beginning to free the cinema from Jerry's chain, which had started out with lofty goals of exclusively family-style entertainment. It only took five weeks for the theatre to start programming some pretty trashy material, and a 4/29 Tribune article revealed that American Cinema Corp., JLC's Missouri and Illinois franchisee, had decided to change the theatre's name to the Biscayne III starting the following Wednesday. This would allow it to show X-rated movies, which the management had been hoping to do. New signage was expected to follow within three to four weeks.
With the expansion of the home-video market, the demand for "blue" movies on the big screen decreased, and the heavy breathing at the Biscayne slowed considerably. Mainstream fare went over well at the triplex until the adjacent Columbia Mall built its own four-screen cinema in 1986. The Dickinson chain, which had taken possession of the Biscayne by now, dropped prices to $1.50 per ticket to stay competitive, but finally threw in the towel in summer 1998.
Dickinson began operating this theatre on 12/18/1976. Photos Photos remain the property of the Member and may not be reproduced without the written consent of the Member. |
