The Oriental was opened in 1926 and was one of the first cinemas inspired by the Far East. The theater played a mix of movies and stage shows. The theater closed in 1981 and sat shuttered for 17 years before undergoing a $32 million restoration. It reopened in 1998 with the Chicago premiere of "Ragtime".
