Opening on July 9, 1965, the University was the last of the area's outdoor theaters. Built by Butterfield Theaters at a reported cost of $500,000, the screen measured 120-feet wide and the theater featured a kiddie playground and in-car heaters. National Amusements bought the theater in 1984 and razed it in 1987 to make way for the Showcase Cinemas.
