Erected in 1928, the Loews Theatre was the first John Eberson atmospheric theatre in the region. The theatre formally opened on September 1, 1928, with the feature "Excess Baggage."
When the Marcus Loew Booking Agency entered into the 25-year lease agreement with the Theatre Realty Corporation for the Loews Theatre, the agency specified seating to be a minimum of 3,000 and a maximum cost of $750,000. Local newspaper accounts report the constructin cost anywhere from $1.1 million to $2.5 million. In May of 1948, the Theatre Realty Corp. sold the property to the Louisville Operating Company for $1.25 million.
In 1953, a new wider screen was installed, and in 1954 the sign was changed from Loews to United Artists. In 1963, the balcony was closed off and remodeled as a second floor theatre, called the "Penthouse Theatre" at a cost of approximately $250,000. The Wurlitzer organ was restored in 1964. The theatre was added to the National Register of Historic Places in March 1978.
