In 1970, John D. "Jack" Loeks, along with nine other stockholders, formed a new theatre circuit called Auto-Cine, Inc. with the intention of building small, automated twin theaters throughout western Michigan. The Plaza Theatre, which opened on October 25, 1972, was the fourth theater in this new circuit.
Originally envisioned as two theaters side-by-side, sharing a common lobby and projection room, the Plaza was changed to a back-to-back configuration when it was discovered that the surveyors had miscalculated the shape of the property. This created a common projection room and a long lobby along one side of the building.
