Eben Dyer Jordan commissioned architect John Galen Howard to design Boston's most magnificent theatre. Howard combined the Beaux Arts style with the newly-invented light bulb to proclaim the theatre's grandeur. The columns, arches and stained glass were accented by 4,500 of these new light bulbs.

Originally designed for opera and theatre, the Majestic was operated by the Shubert Organization in the 1920s and converted to vaudeville. In 1956, movies took over and much of the Beaux Arts splendor was covered over by renovations.

Emerson College acquired the Saxon Theater from Sack Theaters in 1983, and it was granted city landmark status in 1986. With new HVAC, plumbing and electrical systems, a new stage and dressing rooms, the College has pledged to continue restorations until the entire building has been completed.
