The Portal Theatre opened on Christmas Day in 1925. Syufy Enterprises (Century Theatres) acquired the theater on March 27, 1974. It was modernized in October 1974 and reopened as the Empire Theatre. Century Theatres renovated the theater again in 2003 and converted programming to art house product.
