Opened in 1988, the Metro is at the edge of Seattle's University District and has 10 screens. The Metro shows a mix of arthouse and mainstream fare, the former usually played in seven small auditoriums (fewer than 100 seats), the latter in the three larger houses. A large projection booth that serves all theaters is visible to moviegoers through a window on the mezzanine. The Metro's future is somewhat clouded; the building owner has filed plans with the city to convert the theater space to offices, but Landmark Theaters says it signed a new lease this year [2001].
