Information for this tour was contributed by Dave Felthous. Today's Egyptian Theater is the second one to bare that name in Seattle. The first, in the University District, ran for years as a second-run theater under the Fox banner. It was converted to a drugstore in 1960.
The present Egyptian is housed in an old Masonic Auditorium in the Capitol Hill neighborhood. It began at the Moore Theater downtown when two young Canadians, Darrel McDonald and Dan Ireland, came to town, leased the Moore and, with some Egyptian designs painted around the entrance, opened the Moore Egyptian Theater in 1975. They programmed a mix of independent, arthouse and repertory fare for five years before losing their lease.
Forced to move, the two obtained the Masonic property and its 600-seat auditorium. The Egyptian theme is reflected in painted designs around the entrance and in the lobby and auditorium.
McDonald and Ireland founded the Seattle International Film Festival, and the Egyptian has been its main venue, although as the festival has grown several other theaters are being used as well.
The Egyptian is now part of the Seven Gables/Landmark group.
