Built in 1921 by Marcus Loew, the State's location at one of downtown's busiest intersections made it one of Broadway's most profitable theaters for many years. The theater originally offered both film and vaudeville featuring the theater's own orchestra and chorus line. It was here that Fanchon and Marco established their reputation, and Judy Garland was "discovered" here as a part of the singing Gumm Sisters.
