Information for this tour was contributed by Dave Felthous. The first Egyptian Theater in Seattle opened in 1925 in the University District. It had 912 seats on the main floor and 382 in the balcony. The interior was lavishly decorated in Egyptian motif and had a glass-enclosed men's smoking room as well as as a "cry room" for customers with small children. It was part of the regional Hamrick circuit, then was taken over by Fox West Coast Theaters. (Fox later split off its Northwest theaters into a new division, Fox Evergreen.)
Some of the auditorium decor was lost in the 1950s when a CinemaScope screen was placed in front of two carved pillars that flanked the edges of the stage. A red waterfall curtain further obscured portions of the design. CinemaScope at the Egyptian was shown in two widths. The full screen was used for films with stereophonic sound, a slightly narrower image was employed for mono pictures.
In the spring of 1960 the theater was closed and remodeled into a drugstore, which it remains today. The Egyptian's final program reflected its second-run, double-bill policy: "Anatomy of a Murder" and "The Nun's Story".
