John Eberson's only major work in the Detroit area, the Grand Riviera was an atmospheric theater styled after an Italian villa. The theater opened on August 26, 1925, with the film Desert Flower. The word "Grand" was dropped in 1930, and the theater became known as the Riviera.
The Riviera switched to stage productions in 1957, which ran until 1961. Movies ran again until 1969, when concerts took over. The theater closed in 1974.
