One of the largest theaters that Thomas W. Lamb designed for S.Z. Poli, the Palace was renamed the Loew's Palace in 1934, when Poli sold his regional circuit. The theater received a partial restoration in 1978 and then served as an all-purpose hall until closing in 1982.

The Waterbury Palace Foundation formed in 1995 with a goal of purchasing and renovating the theater as a performing arts center, but has since dissolved and never gained control of the theater.

The theater reopened on November 12, 2004.
