As nickelodeons sprang up all over America in the first decade of the twentieth century, Fred Wehrenberg got the notion to convert his family's bake shop into a movie house. The success of this venture inspired him to build St. Louis' first "real" theater constructed especially for the exhibition of films. This 224-seat venue was called the Best Theatre. From this seed, Wehrenberg built the region's most successful local theater chain; if it can overcome its present struggles (it's had to close many of its theaters), the company will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2006.
