Information for this tour was contributed by Travis Cape. In 1924, the Tivoli Theatre opened in University City. It later was called the Magic Lantern and the U-City Cinema. In 1978, Movies Inc. reopened it and reclaimed the original name. They continued operation and merged with Landmark Theatres. In 1992, the theatre fell into the hands of a local operator, after some sneaky lease paperwork. He closed the theatre in May of 1994. A local businessman, Joe Edwards, started a year renovation of the entire building. In May of 1995, the Tivoli reopened looking as it had in 1924. It now has 3 screens. The front auditorium still features original decor, stage, etc. The foyer and the lobby are restored. Edwards also restored the marquee and replicated the vertical sign out front.
