Built as the city's first purpose-built movie house in 1913, its original ornate proscenium has been hidden away behind the scope screen for over 50 years. The stage area behind the original curtain is very shallow.

After a remodel, the theater reopened on June 21, 2003, with a free showing of "Chicago", followed by a public opening on the 27th with the film "The Shape of Things".
