The Theatre Royal opened in 1847 with Verdi's opera "Nabucadonosor" and over the years was the main venue for operas, concerts, plays and even masked balls. During World War II, the British Garrison was entertained here. The theatre was later converted into a 950-seat cinema, and was closed in the early 1960s. It is currently being restored with a planned re-opening in 2004.
