The Mayfair was built in 1932 by the Robertson family from Almonte, Ontario. Although the Mayfair was built as a neighborhood theatre, its design mimicked the grander theatres of the time. Its gilded mirrors, decorative Spanish balconies, plush carpets and thick velvet curtains lent the theatre an air of opulence. Around the 15- by 30-foot screen was an ornate frame in gold, red and green. On a small balcony to the left of the screen was a large clock, its numbers lit from behind. The signs for the exits and washrooms were crafted in leaded stained glass. The projection equipment was the most advanced of its day; its vacuum tubes and photoelectric cells were a source of great pride for the theatre. On December 5, 1932, the Mayfair opened with the screening of "The Blue Danube", starring Brigitte Helm. The price of admission was 25 cents for adults and 10 cents for children.
