Listed on the register of the Historic Building Council in 1993.
Built on the site of the Palais de Dance Pictures, a former ballroom that had a seating capacity of 4,000. This operated as a cinema from 1915 until it was burnt down in 1926. The current Palais Theatre is basically untouched from its original 1927 appearance and since closing as a full time cinema it has been used for live shows. Film presentations are still held there during the Melbourne Film Festival.
